Who We Are

The Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA) represents the nation’s independent natural gas and oil production and exploration industry on national policy issues – before the Congress, federal agencies, courts, media and public.

Our Members

IPAA advocates on behalf of 300-plus corporate members and more than 7,000 individual members from nearly every state in the union. Our producing members drill more than 90 percent of the new wells in the U.S., with the help of other members that provide financial support and oilfield services. IPAA relies on member support to ensure the industry has a strong voice in Washington and around the country. View our Membership Brochure.

To help advance our industry in Washington, we need to speak with a united voice to defend
our vital national treasure, the American oil and gas business!

In addition, access to the entire 7,000-strong membership through our printed membership directory.
  • Access to IPAA Staff: We have award-winning professionals with decades of experience representing the industry in Washington, D.C. They can help you understand areas like the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, tax and environmental regulations, land access and other topics.

  • Reporting: IPAA produces legislative alerts and periodic economic reports to give you what you need to know about industry, regulatory, and legislative efforts all around the country.
  • But Most Importantly: To support our ongoing efforts in Washington on your behalf!

Current and Ongoing Challenges

Continued support from existing and new members is needed to address the following issues:

  • Green House Gas (GHG) Emissions: Communicating to both government audiences and the general public that U.S. natural gas is a linchpin to any GHG emissions control strategy. Abundant natural gas allows the nation to develop GHG emissions strategies using clean, affordable natural gas.
  • EPA: Advocating for cost effective measures in the Environmental Protection Agency’s final rule on methane emissions for new sources.
  • U.S. Fish and Wildlife: Providing reasonable solutions and accurate date for ongoing endangered species listings.
  • BLM: Continuing litigation efforts against the Obama-era regulations proposing waste prevention and resource conservation rulings on venting and flaring.
  • Bureau of Ocean Energy Management: Helping to shape the debate for the next offshore 5-year leasing plan.

IPAA is the industry’s strongest presence in the nation’s capital and these are important times. The entire oil and gas industry remains under fire from anti-development groups; but with these challenges arise unique opportunities that IPAA is seizing for our members.
