IPAA/PESA Energy Education Center Spotlights STEPHANIE SUAREZ

IPAA/PESA Petroleum Academy at Milby High School alumni Stephanie has obtained some amazing accomplishments since graduating in 2012.  During her high school education with the Petroleum Academy, she maintained a 4.39 GPA and ranked 5th in the graduating class of 2012.  She also completed an externship at Valerus in 2011.

In May, 2017 she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in General Geology from the Jackson School of Geosciences at UT Austin.   Her research at UT used U-Pb radiometric dating of zircons grains found in volcanic ashes deposited during the Ordovician to determine when ancient volcanic eruptions occurred.  Determining a precise and accurate age of these events is important information for a multitude of other geoscientists.  She has presented her research at two conferences, the Geological Society of America Annual meeting in Denver, Colorado and the American Geophysical Union meeting in San Francisco, California.  Stephanie has also participated in a Research for Undergraduate Experience funded by the National Science Foundation that allowed her to conduct mineralogy research internationally in an active mine in Baja California Sur, Mexico.

Stephanie was then accepted to the prestigious University of Houston’s Geology Master’s Program to begin working on her Master’s Degree in the fall of 2017.  This an highly ambitious goal as she is the first in her family to attend college.

Earlier this year Stephanie was published again in:

University of Houston

Which was picked up by:

EurekAlert! The Global Source for Science News

Which led to:

NASA Grant Funds Martian Volcano Research

The IPAA/PESA Energy Education Center could not be more proud of Stephanie and her achievements.  We are all very excited to see just how far she will go in the future and wish her well as she continues working on her Master’s Degree in Geochemistry/Geochronology at the University of Houston.
