Independent Petroleum Association of America Expands Staff
Advocacy Group Gears Up for New Year
Washington, D.C. (January 10, 2006) - Recognized as the voice for thousands of independent oil
and natural gas producers and service companies across the United States, the Independent Petroleum
Association of America (IPAA) strengthened it's staff roster this month by adding seasoned professionals
from Capitol Hill, the White House and the business sector. IPAA's new additions contribute a deep
understanding of the political process and provide specific issue expertise related to onshore and
offshore federal land issues and natural gas policy.
"These individuals bring a wealth of knowledge to IPAA that will further enhance our ability
to serve the independent oil and natural gas production industry," said Barry Russell, IPAA president.
IPAA's most recent hires include:
Gideon Lett, Manager of Public Affairs and Communications: As political advisor to both Rep.
Tom Delay (R-TX) and Rep. Mike Rogers (R-AL), Gideon managed numerous successful political and public
affairs campaigns at the local, state and federal levels. He also provided public affairs strategic
counsel to trade associations, Fortune 500 companies and international public relations firms.
Cortney Hazen, Legislative Assistant: Cortney served as a legislative assistant to Sen. Kay
Bailey Hutchinson (R-TX) and will oversee onshore and offshore federal land issues for IPAA. She also
worked at the National Republican Congressional Committee and volunteered on various House and Senate
campaigns.
Caroline Lee, Meetings Manager: During her tenure as deputy associate director of the White
House Visitors Office, Caroline developed tangible interpersonal and event planning experience that will
serve her well as IPAA's new Meeting Manager. She also worked at Rice University's development office
planning fundraising and special events.
Katie Byers, Meetings Coordinator: Katie worked with Competition Policy Associates, a small
economic research and litigation consulting firm, as a research assistant. Additionally, she conducted
in-depth research on oil companies and the bargaining power of the developing world.
IPAA is the national trade association representing oil and natural gas producers that drill 90 percent of the nation's oil and natural gas wells. These companies account for 68 percent of America's oil production and 82 percent of its natural gas production.
