Externship Program

The NEXT GENERATION of America’s oil and natural gas leaders are ready to take their first eager steps toward securing successful careers within the energy industry! This summer, academy students from Westside Engineering & Geosciences Academy, Milby Academy of Petroleum E&P Technology and the Lamar Global Energy Management Institute will participate in the IPAA Externship Training Program. .

The 2012 IPAA Student Externship Training Program provides a 3 week job shadowing opportunity for future engineering and geosciences students at various Houston petroleum exploration, production and service company locations.  

Student Eligibility
Externship program limited to incoming senior academy students with minimum overall 3.0 GPA.
Students must be college bound, planning to enroll in geology, geophysics, physics; or
Engineering: petroleum, chemical, civil, electrical, geological, geophysical, environmental or mechanical.

IPAA Role
IPAA Education Center oversees training program and provides support to each participating company.
IPAA coordinates student carpools and company placement.
IPAA provides professional development training for externs before entering the workforce.
IPAA is responsible for securing parent signatures for FWISD Parental Permission & Release Forms.
IPAA provides "Certificate of Completion".
IPAA hosts post extern meeting with participating companies.

Participating Companies Role
Decide on number of extern positions
Select summer session dates (See session dates below)
Sponsor each extern with $1000 college scholarship.
Company creates training agenda and sends to IPAA Education Center Director.
Company provides job-relevant experiences, which may include attending meetings or conferences.
HR department provides student entrance & exit interviews.
After completion, company sends performance feedback to Doris Richardson.
Providing subsidized parking and student lunches at company option.
Companies may donate $1000 scholarships whether or not they participate in training.

School, Teacher, Parent, Student Role
Externship candidates are selected by assistant principals, academic coordinators and academy teachers.
Externship candidates are interviewed by teachers and IPAA team.
Students have resumes and are prepared for HR department entrance & exit interviews.
Student abides by company dress/ethics codes.
Students provide own transportation.
Parents accept full responsibility for student by signing standard HISD Internship Parental Release forms. Senior externs serve as guest speakers by sharing training experience with fellow academy students.

The IPAA Student Externship Training program not only provides a unique platform for immersing our future workforce into the excitement and challenges of working within the energy industry but also integrates the skills and career information students learn in our petroleum academies. This innovative student externship program serves as a powerful tool to stimulate the NEXT GENERATION of talented energy professionals who will drive this industry forward.
