Milby High School - Academy of Petroleum Exploration & Production Technology

By: Aleyda Corona, Senior

The Academy of Petroleum Exploration & Production Technology at Milby High School has been involved in a variety of activities. All of the students in the academy worked tirelessly and consistently to deliver their best product at the annual Panel and PowerPoint Speaking Competition. Five of those teams received commended performance. We will utilize this opportunity to perfect our presentation and delivery so that next year our teams will receive 1st, 2nd, and/or 3rd place.

The sophomores and juniors were educated by knowledgeable and experienced guest speakers from the industry who spoke about the future of natural gas, the big picture of energy, petroleum engineering, and hydraulic fracturing. The juniors also had the opportunity to attend the Offshore Energy Center Career Day. Through these experiences, our students are garnering more excitement and enthusiasm about the oil and gas industry.

The juniors have started resume building, which will be used in their interviews for their upcoming externship this summer. The externship is one of the pinnacles of the program, so the juniors are hard at work to make sure that they are professional in their skills, practices, and appearance.

The three senior representatives at the scholarship breakfast from our school were Nohemi Chavez, Riky Enriquez, and Karina Leyva. Nohemi was awarded the $12k Apache scholarship. Nohemi and Karina plan on attending Texas A&M while Riky plans on attending the University of Houston. Our remaining seniors are still working on applying for and securing scholarships from many other organizations. They have a lot of experiences to include on their applications from their hard work and exposure through the Academy of Petroleum Explorations & Production Technology at Milby High School.
